A Wicked Good Grant Brings New Music to Newton Choir

A group of middle school students stand in a choir classroom, holding pink music sheets and singing. The room has a modern design with a gray and red checkerboard acoustic wall, a piano in the foreground with colorful sheet music on top, and wigs on shelv

With its soaring melodies, dynamic shifts, and dramatic climax, “Defying Gravity” from the hit musical and movie Wicked is a cultural phenomenon and a favorite among students. Thanks to an educator grant, the song now reverberates through the Newton Middle School choir room.

Vocal music and drama teacher Carly Bright requested new pieces, including “Defying Gravity,” to refresh and revitalize Newton’s choral library. Carly says that because of the grant, students are performing music they love and feel is relevant to them. She added, “Thank you so much for this grant. It has been a game-changer in my classroom, and the kids and I are so lucky to be a part of this amazing community!”

You can hear the students perform their new songs during their spring concert at Newton Middle School on Monday, May 12, at 7 p.m.
