Transition Services Students learn valuable lessons by running a Retail Store

Student Olivia created a custom greeting card

LPS’ Transition Services students are gaining valuable vocational training and flexing their creative muscles through the operation of their own store, Rebel Hawk. Gifts from donors like you helped make the store a reality.

Transition Services is a community based program that serves a wide range of students with disabilities who are 18-21 years of age. One of the goals of the program is to prepare students for an effective and meaningful transition to their adult communities. The store fulfills this goal by giving students experience with creating and selling products.

As part of our Grants to Teacher program, we awarded Rebel Hawk funds to purchase items that allowed them to broaden their offerings including a swing arm heat press, heat transfer vinyl and clothing items that could be customized and sold. Now, the store is filled with merchandise handmade by the students including keychains, customized signs, stickers, greeting cards and more.

Heather Railey, employment counselor for Transition Services, says the students are gaining valuable skills through Rebel Hawk in the areas of critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal communication, task completion and entrepreneurship.
